Visit South America via Panama Canal

There is so much to see in South America – sun-kissed beaches, glacial fjords, rugged mountain ranges, remote villages and Spanish colonial cities. Join Princess Cruises on the 19-day “Galapagos Discovery” cruisetour, departing November 15, 2008. You’ll first sail their new 12-day South America and Panama Explorer cruise on the Royal Princess, from Ft. Lauderdale to Guayaquil, Ecuador. Then, you’ll continue on a fascinating 6-nite land and sea tour of the Galapagos Islands.
Your ship departs Ft. Lauderdale on November 15, 2008, and spends the first two days at sea, where it’s still possible, in today’s busy world, to slow down, relax and watch the sunset from your private balcony. Take time to explore your ship and enjoy all the many amenities Princess has to offer.
Your first port of call is Aruba, a real “Dutch” treat, featuring duty-free shopping, an authentic windmill and wonderful beaches. Next, stop in Catagena, Colombia, which will give you a glimpse of the ancient glory of Spain, with its wide boulevards, massive squares and imposing architecture.
As you approach the Panama Canal, your ship will bring you first to the San Blas Islands, 357 to be exact, only 40 of which are inhabited. It’s a tropical paradise to enjoy for the day.

The next day you’ll begin your full transit of the Canal. The classic, ocean-to-ocean journey across Gatun Lake, past Gaillard Cut, along the Continental Divide and under the Americas Bridge will be a highlight of your cruise. To see it is an experience of a lifetime. Once you reach Fuerte Amador, on the Pacific side, there’ll be more time to explore.
You’ll enjoy taking a ride on the Pacific Aerial Tram in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, your next stop. You’ll see the fascinating world of the tropical forest as you glide silently through the top of the canopy, then return through the lower canopy with its beautiful foliage of ferns, lianas and orchids. Following the tram ride enjoy a delicious Costa Rican-style lunch.

Your final port of call is the Ecuadorian city of Esmeraldas, located in a lush region of green tropical beauty. Stay in town and enjoy the scenery or visit the nearby ecological reserve.
You’ll have another day at sea to rest, before disembarking your ship in Guayaquil, to fly to Baltra and begin your tour of the Galapagos Islands.
You’ll embark your ship, the MV Legend that afternoon, and set sail to Bartolome Island. See volcanic formations, marine iguanas, lava lizards, penquins and sea turtles.
The next day you’ll wake aboard your ship on the largest island, Isabela. See giant tortoises, land iguanas, and commorants. Sail to Fernandia for the biggest marine iguanas, penquins, hawks and sea lions.
In the morning, you’ll arrive Santiago Island, full of lava flows. See great blue herons, oyster catchers, etc. Swim and snorkel in search of octopuses, sea horses, star fish, etc. Also visit Rabida Island, with its dark red volcanic beach.
The next day you’ll sail to Santa Cruz and visit the Charles Darwin Research Station. You’ll stay here, onboard ship, for the night, then fly to Quito, Ecuador the next day, where you’ll be transferred to the JW Marriott hotel, your home for 2 nights. During your stay in Quito, you’ll enjoy a tour of the city, then have time on your own to explore as you please.
